Adjusting to life as an expat

Living as an expat is both exciting and challenging. You get to experience new cultures, meet new people, and build a new life in a foreign country. However, adjusting to life as an expat can also be daunting, especially if you don't know anyone in your new home or don't speak the local language.

Moving to a new country can be a thrilling and rewarding experience, but it can also be full of challenges, especially when it comes to adjusting to a new culture, language, and way of life. As an expat, you may experience culture shock, homesickness, and other forms of stress. However, with the right mindset, preparation, and support, you can make the transition to expat life smoother and more enjoyable.

In this blog post, we'll share with you 10 tips for adjusting to life as an expat, from researching your new home to building a social network, staying positive, and taking care of yourself.

Adjusting to life as an expat

Tip #1: Research your new home

Before moving to a new country, it is important to do thorough research on the culture, customs, language, and practicalities of your new destination. This will help you better understand what to expect and how to adapt to your new environment.

You can read books, watch documentaries, and do online research on the country's history, politics, customs, and culture. You can also reach out to expat communities, embassy or consulate staff, and other resources that can provide you with more information and guidance.

Don’t forget social media, it is a great way to connect with expat groups/communities and to meet expats in your local area!

Tip #2: Learn the language

Learning the local language is one of the most important things you can do as an expat. Not only will it help you communicate with people, but it will also help you understand the culture better. Learning the language of your new country can help you communicate with locals, make new friends, and feel more integrated.

There are many resources available to help you learn a new language, such as language schools, online courses, language exchange programs, and language learning apps.

A great way to advance your language skills is by watching local TV shows and movies, listening to the radio and reading newspapers.

Tip #3: Make connections

Building a social network is fundamental for an expat. It will help you to feel supported and connected in your new home. Try to make friends with locals or other expats, join clubs or organizations (volunteering is a great way to meet new people that share the same values and interests), and attend cultural events. As we mentioned in tip #1, you can also reach out to expat groups and communities online, through social media or expat forums. They are great ways to connect with other expats and make new friends.

It is a worthy goal to try and make local friends right from the beginning and avoid these expat communities and events, but it can be quite challenging to find your footing with the locals in the first instance. Connecting with other expats will help you feel less isolated and provide a support system as you adjust to your new life. The local friends will come with time.

Tip #4: Keep an open mind

Adjusting to a new culture can be challenging, but approaching your new environment with an open mind can make the transition smoother and easier. Try new things, be open to new experiences, and be willing to adapt to the new environment. You may encounter customs and traditions that are unfamiliar or different from what you are used to, but keeping an open mind and embracing the new culture will help you better integrate and enjoy your new life.

Embrace the new culture and way of life, try new things, and participate in local activities and events. You will learn about your new country and feel more at your place and like you belong.

Tip #5: Stay in touch with loved ones back home

Being away from friends and family can be a real challenge for expats, so it is important to stay in touch with them. Regular video calls, messages, and visits can help you feel connected to your family and friends and provide you with the support you need to adjust to your new life abroad.

Set up in your calendar weekly/monthly calls (and maybe annual visits) with your family and your friends so that you keep regular contact with them. Share your adventures with them, keep them in your life. Don’t forget to ask how they are doing!

Tip #6: Take care of yourself

Moving to a new country can be stressful, so it's important to prioritize self-care by taking care of your physical and mental health. Exercise regularly, practice mindfulness, and engage in activities that make you happy.

Make time in the calendar for yourself. Go to your yoga class, cook healthy and nurturing meals, and think about what you want for your expatriation.

Taking care of your physical and mental health will help you better cope with the stress of expat life and adjust to it quicker and with more ease.

Tip #7: Embrace the new experiences

Expatriation can offer you many new and exciting experiences. Embrace them! Try new foods, explore the local culture, and travel to nearby destinations. These experiences will not only enrich your (expat) life, but also help you better understand and appreciate your new home.

Getting involved in local activities is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture and make new friends. Attend festivals, join clubs, and volunteer for local organizations to meet people who share your interests.

Tip #8: Give yourself time

Adjusting to a new country takes time and patience. Don't expect everything to fall into place immediately. Be kind to yourself and don't beat yourself up if you don't feel immediately comfortable. It's totally normal to feel homesick, stressed, or overwhelmed, so take the time you need to adjust to your new life.

Make time for reflecting on your feelings, what you want to do, and the meaning you want to give to your expatriation. Talk with other expats about your feelings, they will be a great support and will have tips to help you.

Tip #9: Learn from the locals

Engaging with locals can help you better understand the culture and way of life of your new home. Talk to locals, ask questions, and listen to their stories. This will help you learn about their customs, traditions, and beliefs, and deepen your appreciation for your new surroundings.

A great way to do this is to engage with your neighbors. Don’t be shy, and go have a little chat regularly with them or maybe you can even invite them over for a drink!

Tip #10: Keep a positive attitude

A positive attitude can go a long way in making the transition to expat life smoother. Focus on the positive aspects of your new life and practice gratitude for the experiences you are having. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that expat life offers, and stay optimistic about your future in your new home. Expatriation is a gift! It will make you grow, learn about yourself and explore different facets of yourself.

We will never repeat it enough but MINDSET IS EVERYTHING. It can literally change your life in one second.
